Take Two

This morning I started my day with a hydrating breakfast after yesterday’s crippling dehydration incident.  A nice smoothie seemed like the best option.
This one was made with:
Chocolate Vega
chia seeds
and milk
I also chugged a lot of water in an attempt to keep hydrating myself.
After breakfast, I took Clyde for a walk around the hood.
I did some Sunday blog reading and watched a good ol’ 80’s classic:
“Can I borrow your underpants for 10 minutes??”

One more hint:
While drooling over Jake Ryan (ok, he NEVER looked like he was in high school, come on!) I assembled a simple lunch.  Tuna on a sandwich thin with some carrot sticks.
Then it was off to 90 minute hot yoga AGAIN.  Yes, I’m apparently a glutton for punishment.  This time I was armed with no less than two bottles of Gatorade, a big bottle of water, and a coconut water, vowing I would not end up dehydrated again.  Thankfully, take two of 90 minute hot yoga went much better today.  I was able to stay relatively hydrated despite the extreme amount of sweat I lost.  I brought my friend Michelle, who has never done Yoga, and she did AWESOME! 
In celebration of successfully completing yoga, we went to Pinkberry for fro-yo.  I’ve been DYING to try that place for weeks now, and we finally went!
There were a lot of tempting options, but I knew as soon as I saw coconut, that I was getting that.  I did coconut and chocolate swirl topped with shredded coconut, almonds, dark chocolate crisps, and strawberries.  SO DELICIOUS!
Then I headed home and later had the same dinner as last night, Mexican soup.  This time I topped my soup with some avocado.
The rest of my evening was spent playing with my baby.
“Mom, please throw my tennis ball 3,621 more times, so I can run and get it for you.”
And of course I do, because who can say no to that face…??  🙂
Oh yeah, AND, I signed up for the Outer Banks Half Marathon tonight.  EEKKKKK!

Things I Do on Weeknights

I haven’t really gotten back into my bloggy grove yet this week after being away in Chicago last weekend.  I’m still kind of coming down from the high and not sure my head actually made it back to Charlotte with me.  I totally lack focus!
My weeknights have been pretty similar to other weeks.  Some exercise, some food, some puppy kisses…the usual.
I did hot yoga with Jessie and Cindi on Tuesday night.  It was good to get back in the yoga studio.  Aside from my quick yoga class at The Healthy Living Summit, I probably hadn’t been to yoga in about a week and a half.  This was my first time meeting Cindi and she seems really cool.  We have a lot in common and live close to each other.  I for see us hanging out again in the future. 🙂
Last night (Wednesday) I did another run.  I’m still Garmin-less for now so all I can do is estimate my mileage.  I’d say I probably did about 3 miles and it again felt good!  I think I’m really on the way to recovery and building mileage again.  I might make a deal with myself that if I can do 6 miles with no problems again I can go ahead and get a Garmin (I’m still holding on to a Coin-Star gift certificate to Amazon that I got for the very purpose of ordering a Garmin with right before I hurt my knee!) and sign up for another half marathon!  The idea of this excites me!!
 I have to be honest.  I haven’t been to the grocery store all week.  There was a fleeting moment last night where I considered going and even went through and organized my coupons, but I just didn’t feel like it.  It was kinda rainy and I was feeling lazy about trekking over there.  Here’s the thing.  I keep A LOT of food in my house.  My husband gets on my case all the time about how I need to eat what we have instead of buying more stuff.  I LOVE having a stocked pantry though.  I love having many cans of black beans and chick peas, a variety of different kinds of grains, pasta, and rice.  I love having many different kinds of frozen veggies, fruit, and bread in the freezer, just in case.  Really, fresh produce is only thing I’m low on.  I have about a 1/3 bag of spinach, some grapes, and some carrots, and that’s about it for fresh fruit and veggies.  I definitely need a bunch of things, but I can get by without a little longer.
That said, here’s some of “eat what’s in my house” eats this week- using up what I had:
I had this Zone bar to get rid of (hubby and I have a box from Costco).  So, I chopped up about half the Zone bar and put it over banana soft serve (I now keep a giant ziplock freezer bag full of chopped banana pieces for soft serve at all times!) as a topping.
I had this for breakfast one day.  It was actually pretty yummy.
Tuesday night I had what was left of my quinoa with veggies from Sunday with a little cheese melted on top, with a side of oven roasted brussell sprouts for dinner. 

I tried my hand at another round of overnight oats this week.  This time in my mix I had:
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup almond milk
about a tablespoon of macadamia nut butter
Chia seeds
In the morning I added shredded coconut to the top.  Wow, this was good!  I actually did it two days in a row because I loved the combo so much!
Last night when I decided not to go to the grocery store, I threw together a quick burrito.  I used:
an Archer Farms (Target) multigrain wrap
black beans
canned organic diced tomato
fresh spinach
cottage cheese
shredded cheddar
I just wrapped it up and microwaved it for a couple minutes til it was melted together.
One thing I haven’t addressed much is the fact that because I’m married to a pilot, I eat alone A LOT.  I like to be kind of creative when I cook, but at the same time, it’s sometimes hard to get excited to spend a long time cooking something complicated when it’s just for one.  I’m all about quick and easy meals, like the burrito above.  Even when Greg is home, I rarely spend more than about an hour total cooking a meal for us unless it’s something really out there.

Hanging at The Counter

I bet you can’t guess what I did last night? If you guessed another blogger meet-up then you would be right! Really, I don’t know that I even really consider these to be blogger meet-ups anymore. These girls have become my friends and I really just like hanging out with them. We do discuss blogging some when we get together but we also get a lot of normal “girl talk” when we hang out.
Last night Katie, Jen, Jessie, Jen, and I did hot yoga (and yes, the sweat poured off me like rain again) together.  After yoga we went to The Counter for dinner and further socializing. 

There are a lot of really good burger places in Charlotte: Big Daddy’s (the scene of one of my first blogger meet-ups), Nix, and The Counter.  Big Daddy’s has a pretty amazing black bean burger.  I’d say Nix has my favorite beef burger if I’m eating meat.  This was my first time at The Counter.  I liked their custom menu, which was kind of similar to a sushi menu, where you check boxes to make your selections.
I chose a veggie burger (small) on lettuce instead of bun, with cheddar, guac, tomatoes, grilled onion, black bean and corn salsa, and roasted red peppers.
We ordered a pile of sweet potato fries to share.  They rocked.
Here is my masterpiece burger…  Nom Nom Nom… 🙂  It was totally yummy and I should bring Greg here as he’s quite the veggie burger connoisseur these days.  I think he’ll approve.  Although, we were told upon leaving that they are going to be making it into a sushi/burger place soon.  Not sure what I think of this concept even though I love sushi and burger.  Together this sounds like an odd concept though…

Bloggers Bloggers Everywhere!

Thursday was a flurry of activity as usual.  I started my day with something I don’t usually have for breakfast: Ice Cream!  Banana Soft Serve!  With a scuffin crumbled on top. 

Then off to work I went.  I went straight from work to yoga, because Greg was home durjing the day ysterday, so I didn’t have to rush home to let Clyde out.  On my way to yoga, I tried this Kind Bar.

Ok, so I devoured it before I got a picture of the ACTUAL bar, but here’s the wrapper.  This bar was VERY TASTY!
Yoga was fun.  I met Jessie for a power mixed class.  It was a nice workout and I actually sweated my tape from Greenapple off!  Ooops!  
After class I was in the locker room at the studio showering and getting ready for my next event of the evening when I struck up a conversation with another girl in the room who turned out to be a yoga instructor there and also blogs!  Hi Sarah!  I hope to take one of her classes soon 🙂
After yoga, I had a Charlotte Bloggers Meetup at Charley’s Restaurant.  Funny story, but since I’m a member of (I’ve mentioned before this is how I got involved in a running group), I get emails about new groups.  When I saw the email about this group, I recognized the organizer as being a girl I went to high school with in Massachussetts!  RANDOM!  Brittany writes Mommy Words, a blog about her life as a mother of three and lives in Charlotte.  I always thought it was funny that she was in my class of about 400 people and we were the only two “Britts”.  Our name was rarer back then, before Britney Spears and all the other crazy Britts started popping up everywhere.  It’s even more random that we both ended up in Charlotte!
I mainly attended the meetup to see Brittany, but I also was interested in checking out the group.  It was interesting!  It got me thinking about the purpose and direction of my blog again.  Which, in case you can’t tell, I have no clue where I’m really going with it.  I just know I enjoy writing it.  I may start giving my focus some serious thought again though.
While there I had this yummy salad call the California:
It had goat cheese, strawberries, mandarin oranges, and pecans.  I was like, YES PLEASE!  Yum 🙂
The blogger meetup went late and I didn’t get home til about 10:30pm. 
I had a fun day meeting all these bloggers everywhere though!

Doggies, Green Tomatoes, and My Return to Running!

Last night Clyde had a doggie playdate with a certain semi-famous dog- James Caitlin and I had been emailing each other since before she moved to Charlotte about our doxies and how it would be fun to get them together.  We finally coordinated schedules and made it happen last night! 
We met up at a park to take the dogs for a walk and chat…

We had a great time chatting and watching the dogs play.  The leashes had to be untangled quite a few times, but we rolled with it.  James was very tolerant of Clyde’s massive amounts of puppy energy. 
Once home, I hopped on Twitter and for the umteenth time today saw strings of conversation about running.  I had been thinking I might try running this week and see how it went, and last night I decided to go for it.

The run was great!  The left knee/leg didn’t bother me at all.  It was more the soreness on my wound on the right leg if anything.  I loved being back out there though!
I finally made a late dinner after the run.
My buddy Gibson had given me some green tomatoes. 
Fried Green Tomatoes anyone?
I used two, which ended up being more than I could eat by myself.  This was my first time making them though, so i wasn’t sure how it would go.  I used this basic recipe.
The seeds you see are Flax seeds, which I added to my breadcrumbs.
Finished product over plain baby spinach.  It was yummy!  I would like to do a fried green tomato BLT sometime.  I had one in Beaufort, SC that I still dream about…
I went to a hot yoga class with Jen this morning and also saw the other Jen there.  This class was a little different than yoga I’ve been to.  It was even HOTTER than the others at our studio, and the teacher played upbeat music instead of the usual “Zen” type.  Think Coldplay, Kesha, Pearl Jam, etc…  I liked the music, it was cool.  I again melted into a pool of sweat and at one point felt a little weak and shaky, but I got through it and it was a good workout. 
I am now packing and getting ready to leave for Hilton Head for the weekend!  I can’t wait to see my brother, sister-in-law, and parents!  This will be Clyde’s second trip to HHI, and first time meeting his Aunt and Uncle.  See ya for the recap!

Back in Business!

Sooooooooooooo, I got a new camera- YAY!  It’s a Nikon – Coolpix S3000.  I debated and researched and talked to other bloggers (well mostly Jen) and decided this was the camera I wanted for the price and specs it included.  I really haven’t had much time to play with it yet, as 12am last night was the first time I laid eyes on it.  I ordered it on Best Buy and Greg picked it up at the store for me while I was at work yesterday.  Here is the first test shot (Greg took this one):

Moving onto my morning coffee.  I sometimes use one of these “frothers” in my milk to make my milk nice and frothy.  I got this at TJ Maxx or Marshalls for under $10 a couple years ago.  I like frothy milk…
You just put a small amount of milk in a mug, use the frother in it, then microwave the milk for about 30 seconds (you have to watch it though because sometimes it overflows), and voila:

You have frothy milk on your coffee!  I also like a hit of cinnamon…

I like the camera but I still have A LOT to learn about it.  There’s supposed to be a “Food” setting on it, so I’m looking forward to trying that.  There’s also a bunch of different flash settings and stuff like that, and I really haven’t played with any of that yet.  So far so good though! 

Ok, now that you have seen all my beautiful new pictures, I’ll catch up on what I’ve been up to this busy week!  Rewind to Tuesday night.  I went to a yoga.  The studio actually combined hot yoga and power yoga due to staffing, so it was kind of a hot power yoga class.  It was a tough one.  I don’t know that someone totally new to yoga would have liked that class, because the instructor didn’t always explain the moves and used the “yoga terms” for a lot of the moves rather than the plain English term.  Luckily, my former yogi enthusiast self knew what she was talking about most of the class.  It was another sweat fest too, and I totally forgot to bring a towel to wipe my sweaty head off with so at one point I booked it to the rest room to grab a wad of paper towels and winged it (I really need to stop talking about how sweaty I get during yoga, I know).  When I got home, hubby and I had pizza and salad and the pizza was actually FREE from Donato’s because they had some kind of promo going I heard about.  I love Donato’s and love it even more when it’s FREE!

Last night I went to the Dave Matthews Band concert with Kelly (check her blog out, there may be a recap and pictures since she had her camera!).  I was actually her stand-in date, as her hubby had to go out of town for work and was unable to join her at the last minute.  I happily accepted her invite!  I’ve actually seen DMB twice before last night, but the last time I saw them was ELEVEN years ago!  And guess where I saw them?  In CHARLOTTE!!  Random right?  I went with my brother when we were living with my parents for the summer during college in Hilton Head.  We made the drive up to Charlotte to see them at the same venue as last night.

Anyway, Kelly and I went to The Flying Saucer for dinner on the way to the show.  I had a pear cider and she had the Sam Adams Summer Ale, and both of us got variations on a veggie sandwich.  I had a veggie burger and she had a veggie wrap, both with salad on the side.  I love Flying Saucer.  They have at least 200 beers to choose from and the food is always great too.  Win!

After dinner we sat in traffic for about an hour to get less than 2 miles and that was pretty damn frustrating, but finally got parked and got inside RIGHT as the DMB was going on.  We completely missed the opening act though.  Kelly got us two of the biggest beers I’ve ever seen while I was in the bathroom.  They were these GIANT Coors Light cans.  I probably drank a little over half of mine before I called it quits. 
I’m actually a big fan of DMB’s older stuff.  Under The Table And Dreaming (their first album) came out when I was in High School and I remember it being on my mix rotation heavily.  I also liked the next couple albums, but haven’t been quite as into their newer stuff.  They played a decent amount of old stuff and I definitely sang along and enjoyed myself.  It was a late night!  I got home just before midnight and was out!  Thanks for the invite Kelly!  I had a great time! 🙂

I Need a Weekend from My Weekend…

Whew, I had a lot going on this weekend.  So much that I actually turned down meeting a friend for drinks last night, because I was DONE by the end of the day.  I apparently need to schedule some downtime for myself!
Yesterday started with a bowl of fresh blueberries, peach, and plum.  I love fresh summery fruit 🙂  No photo since my camera is still not working 😦  Here’s the update on the waterlogged camera.  I *think* the thing was almost back in working condition and then when I went to put the memory card in I realized a piece of rice was lodged in there.  A lot of people suggested putting my camera in rice to help it dry out.  I did so with all it’s doors open to get the inside dry and the stupid rice went into the card port.  In the process of trying to dislodge it, I may have screwed the thing up even more (i mangled some prongs trying to dislodge the rice), because now I’m getting a “card read error” message upon turning the camera on….  NOT GOOD!
I still have no phone, but the husband just arrived home this morning and is going to take a look and see if he can make it work.  I don’t have high hopes, but he actually has fixed his own phone 3 times, so you never know.  He wouldn’t let me get a new phone til he tried messing with it, so I’ve now been phone-less going on four days here.
I later met my friend Chloe for a late brunch at The Flying Biscuit.  I’ve been wanting to try this place for a really long time and it totally lived up to my expectations.

I had The Hollywood Omelette, which was: Egg whites, spinach, mushrooms, and white cheddar cheese topped with a warm tomato coulis and served with fresh fruit.  It came with the signature biscuit and wow, everything was delish!  I even tried a bite of Chloe’s grits after she insisted (I told her I wasn’t a big fan of grits), and they too were awesome.  Breakfast Win!
I went home and regrouped and later in the afternoon I headed back out for an afternoon Power Yoga class.  I met Jessie and also saw Jen there.  I again was a human fountain of sweat, but the class was great and I felt good after.  One thing I LOVE at this yoga studio is the lavender scented cold towels they give you during savasana.  Mmmmmm…  So needed by the end of a sweaty class!
After yoga, I was DONE.  I went home, grilled up some zucchini over quinoa and black beans, caught up on internet stuff, watched P.S. I Love You, and gave the pup some attention.  Really great downtime 🙂
