Snap, Crackle, Pop

It’s fun to hear “snap, crackle, pop” when you eat your Rice Krispies but these are sounds you don’t want to hear coming from your own body parts.  A couple days ago (actually it was the next day after my ridiculously hot run) I started hearing a not-so-nice snapping noise coming from my left knee.  It’s especially noticeable when I go up stairs.  Like the sound of someone snapping their fingers.  Loudly.  Great…
You may remember the week before my half-marathon, I started having some quad (IT Band) issues.  I think my left leg is still kind of jacked up.  One thing I never mentioned as a possible reason for the leg/knee/quad problem was that I wiped out on the tennis court the week before the half marathon, falling and partially skinning my left knee.  I’m kind of thinking that may be related to my quad and knee problem.
Right now the knee doesn’t really hurt.  I can walk around with no problems.  The knee/leg just feels weird in general and the snapping noise when I walk up stairs is definitely concerning.
I figured I should get the opinion of someone who is actually trained in this sort of thing to take a look.  I went to see Jen’s husband, chiropractor extraordinaire 🙂  He is a triathlete, knows the importance of sports to people, and I respect his opinion, so I figured I would see what he thought.  It was kind of funny seeing him in a professional capacity after many times hanging out with him with Jen, but he was very knowledgeable and professional.  I like that his practice is proactive with treatment and deals with a lot of sports injury type issues.  I worried that a GP may just give me an anti-inflammatory and send me on my way to rest.  If I did only that, I worry that the injury will keep reoccurring every time I start up again.
My diagnosis at this point is sort of unclear.  X-rays were taken of my knee and one spot is kind of inconclusive (there was a suspicious white spot) and may require a different X-ray view taken in order to see the area better.  There’s some red tape involving insurance (isn’t there always??), but I’ll probably be getting some treatment once that is figured out.
Until the injury/problem is resolved I’m hesitant to really do a lot of running and risk further aggravating whatever is wrong with it.  I am hoping I can get this taken care of now, when I’m not in training for something, and then in a month or so I’m good to go and can train for another half marathon in the fall.  It’s frustrating though.  Especially when in the past few days the weather has been GORGEOUS- like low 80’s, kind of perfect running weather, as opposed to the 95 degree plus temperatures I’ve been trying to run in the past couple weeks.

Oh no! Sounds like you’re in good care. Good thing your being proactive about it. This is a good time of year to lay low for awhile anyway.
